Why Learn Guitar Online
Why am I choosing online guitar lessons instead of private guitar lessons?
1 – Cost
I’ve gone to a private music tutor for guitar lessons in a local music store a few years ago. I went to only 6 guitar lessons, once per week. At the time, it cost about $30 per lesson for acoustic guitar. That means, I spent $180 on lessons — and I have nothing to show for it!
The music teacher was very nice, but he was accustom to teaching children and had a specific course of steps that he teaches everyone. To be honest, he was accommodating enough, and did not require me to go through the exact steps he has kids take when teaching them how to play guitar. However, I still found the investment to be a waste of money.
I believe that most people, like me, learn best by “learning at your own pace”, learning at home, and learning how to play guitar with a home study course or home study self-teaching resources, instead of costly private guitar lessons. (You just need to be dedicated to completing the goal, and set aside a little time each day, or at least per week.)
2 – Learn at your own pace
With private guitar lessons, you’re either going too fast or too slow – either way, you’re learning at the pace set by the instructor.
When you learn how to play guitar at home, using a good home study course, you are learning at your own pace. (Be sure to challenge yourself!)
The great thing about learning with home study courses, is that when you want to go back to a previous lesson and brush up or improve on certain skills, you can easily refer back to the section in your DVD, or online course. With a private tutor you can’t do this. (Unless, of course, you video record every lesson – which might be a good idea!)
Plus, if you need to take some time off, for whatever reason, you don’t have to worry about calling 24 hours in advance to cancel your scheduled appointment without a penalty fee. And, when you’re able to get back into your lessons — whenever that time may be: It’s right there, ready for you.
You now *own* that material, and it’s available for you, for the rest of your life.
3 – Learn in your underwear
Well, you *might* want to have *some* clothes on – but hey, it’s your home. Dress however you want to dress when you’re practicing, and learning how to play guitar.
In all seriousness, when you use an online course, or home study course to teach yourself guitar, you can practice and take your lessons at any time, any where, and with any regularity that suits your schedule or ambition.
There are no extra costs if you want to speed up your training and go through 2 week’s worth of lessons in one week.
4 – Learn what you want
If you’re really, really lucky – you’ll find the right guitar teacher immediately. He or she will know the kind of music you want to learn, the pace and type of lessons you want, and the results you’re looking for, and your teacher will be a perfect fit.
However, most teachers have a set routine, or a “menu” of routines that they must fit you within. Thus, you are subject to learning how, and what they want to teach you. (Of course, you can tell the teacher what you want to learn, but unless you’re very comfortable with being assertive in situations that you’re unsure of what you don’t know, it’s likely that you’ll simply default to their judgment.)
Using a home study course, or online learning course, you can learn the exact guitar skills that you want to learn, in the order in which you want to learn them, and learn the exact songs that you want to learn. Nobody tells you what to do, darn-it!
